Grille Clips: How to Identify and Replace Broken Grille Retainers

A grille clip must match the grille, bumper or front-end panel mounting point. A loose or missing retainer can make the grille rattle, shift at speed or leave a visible gap. The safest match is the OEM or interchange number on the original clip. If the number is missing, compare the head, stem, locking barb and panel opening before ordering.
Identify the retainer, not just the vehicle
Grille attachments vary by model, trim level, facelift and production plant. Some use plastic push clips, some use metal spring clips and others use screws with a captured washer or a plastic nut.
- Part number — the most reliable way to match the replacement.
- Head type — round, rectangular, winged or low-profile.
- Stem length — must reach the locking point without bottoming out.
- Barb design — single, double or split locking tabs.
- Mounting hole — measure the slot or hole in the grille and body panel.

How to remove a broken grille clip
- Open the hood and inspect the attachment points. Do not pull the grille before locating hidden screws or clips.
- Remove covers or upper radiator shrouds if they block access.
- Release the locking tabs with a plastic trim tool. Do not pry against a painted or brittle edge.
- Remove broken plastic from the mounting hole. A trapped fragment can prevent the new clip from locking.
- Check the bracket and grille tabs. A cracked bracket must be repaired or replaced before fitting a new clip.
How to install a replacement
- Confirm the clip number and dimensions.
- Clean the mounting point and inspect the sealing or anti-rattle surface.
